I know, I know—this newsletter has been like a political rally with a side of existential dread lately. But fear not! At its core, The Villain is just as much about culture and entertainment as it is about politics. So, in this special edition, we’re putting down the campaign signs and digging back into our roots. Get ready for a rundown of some recent music that’s dropped.
Here’s what I’m jamming to that you absolutely should be too—because let’s face it, nothing distracts from the impending doom of the world quite like a killer soundtrack and well-rounded playlist!
* Scores for music may vary as it depends on what mood I was in when I listened to them.
Liam Payne, Your Legacy is Our Endless Thanks
Before we dive into the latest music, it’s important to acknowledge the tragic passing of Liam Payne. While many knew him for his impressive vocal talents, his songwriting skills deserve just as much recognition. As a key member of One Direction, Liam contributed significantly to the band’s discography, penning some of their biggest hits and fan favorites. Notably, he wrote what I’d argue is their best song: Long Way Down, which offers a mature reflection on the highs and lows of fame. It’s a poignant reminder of the complexity behind the flashing lights.
Warriors x Eisa Davis and Lin-Manuel Miranda
THE WARRIORS CAME OUT TO PLAY: 8.0/10
So the real October surprise was the new album that Lin-Manuel Miranda—the genius behind Hamilton—and Pulitzer Prize finalist playwright Eisa Davis dropped. Warriors is a concept album for a a new musical—that’s not coming to Broadway, at least not anytime soon—designed to be consumed in one glorious sitting, and let me tell you, it sounds absolutely fantastic. The lineup? Total bonkers! We’re talking Coleman Domingo, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Ghostface Killah, Busta Rhymes, and some Broadway greats. Seriously, it’s like they went through a “who’s who” of musical talent and just said, “Yes, please!”
Now, not to spoil the plot, but this album is inspired by the 1979 cult classic The Warriors, and you’ll know that right away when the iconic “Warriors come out to play” echoes in the opening track. It follows a Coney Island street gang trying to make their way home after being falsely accused of taking out a gang leader advocating for peace. Drama, baby!
While Eisa and Lin’s gender-bent twist on this classic retains that signature Lin-Manuel sound, it thankfully reigns in the usual cheesy factor. Thank goodness for that!
The warriors themselves are delightful, each with a unique story that adds layers to their journey. The various gangs throughout the city are crafted with such flair that they could easily headline their own spin-offs. If you loved the original The Warriors, you’re going to vibe with this fresh take on the characters and their struggles. And the music? Oh boy. A Light Or Somethin’ has me feeling all the feels on repeat, the beat for Make Way For Cyrus reminds me of an incredible step team and drumline, and the entire cast is just serving up vocal gold!
And let’s talk about Luther. That role feels like it was tailor-made for me—seriously, if this ever makes it to Broadway, I’m ready for my close-up!
While Davis and Miranda have expressed a desire to see a stage adaptation someday, they currently have no plans for a Broadway debut. I love the innovation, but I need to see this live! One listen and I was completely hooked, utterly captivated by the warriors’ fight for survival. So seriously, if you haven’t checked it out yet, what are you even doing? This is a musical journey you don’t want to miss!
Tension II x Kylie Minogue
OVERALL GOOD, BUT IT DIDN’T BREAK THE TENSION: 7.9/10
A bold and innovative follow-up to Kylie Minogue’s successful Tension album, Tension II is just as much of a party starter, even if none of the tracks quite reach the dizzying heights of the first album. But let’s be real—this is Kylie we’re talking about, and she knows how to keep the dance floor alive!
As she gears up for her 2025 tour—her first since 2019—this album builds on the groove and showcases Kylie doing what she does best: owning her title as the ultimate disco diva. What I love most about Kylie is her delightful penchant for nonsense syllables. From her iconic 2001 hit Can’t Get You Out of My Head to last year’s earworm Padam Padam, and now in Tension II with Taboo—or should I say “Taboo-do-doo, do-dooo”—she knows how to make us sing along with joy!
From thudding ’90s house beats to heartbroken slow dances, Tension II feels like a high-energy encore that leaves you wanting more. The whole album practically demands that you listen while decked out in sequins, surrounded by strobe lights and a glimmering disco ball. It’s an experience meant to be felt and danced to, not just heard.
With Tension 2025 on the horizon, I can already tell the tour is going to be an absolute blast. Get ready to be swept off your feet and onto the dance floor! Kylie is back, and she’s bringing the party with her!
TRUST! x Rebecca Black
REBECCA BLACK IS REBECCA BACK… WITH A BANGER!: 8.3/10
After her viral Boiler Room set, Rebecca Black is on a serious upward trajectory, and honestly, it’s about time! Sure, Friday might follow her around like a clingy ex for the rest of her days, but let’s talk about TRUST!—now that’s a banger that deserves a permanent spot in the “Who is Rebecca Black?” lexicon. This track is pure fire, and if her upcoming project is anything like this, I am so in!
There’s such a clear vision here; it’s brash, bold, and utterly unapologetic, making it an instant club-ready anthem. You can practically hear the dance floors buzzing with excitement just waiting for this track to drop. Rebecca Black isn’t just getting people talking; she’s getting them dancing—and isn’t that what we all want?
So, if you’re not already on the Rebecca Black hype train, now’s the time to hop on! Trust me. This new era is shaping up to be electrifying, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.
No Broke Boys Music Video x Tinashe
GIVE TINASHE HER TENS: 8.1/10
While this song isn’t new, the music video is, and that’s why we’re here chatting about it! When Tinashe dropped her Quantum Baby album a couple of months ago, I instantly knew she had a hit on her hands with No Broke Boys. So, when she announced a music video for it, I was all in. And honestly, it’s just another prime example of what makes a Tinashe video so fantastic!
Tinashe, the pop star we adore, serves up a fun, choreo-packed spectacle that perfectly matches the song’s vibe. I mean, I’d expect nothing less! I found myself thinking, “Oh, the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders wish they could!” And I can’t help but love that the video skips the usual boy drama—except for the guy at the start getting carted off on a stretcher with a broken arm (comedy). However, I do wish the video had a bit more narrative coherence. A few extra scenes to build up or give some background to the cheerleader battle would’ve been nice but overall it wasn’t needed.
And while No Broke Boys made its rounds on TikTok, it definitely deserves to be an even bigger hit. Tinashe is giving us everything we need and I can’t wait to see her live again in a couple weeks!
Perfect Stranger x FKA Twigs
FKA IS NO STRANGER TO HITS: 8.6/10
I’ll admit, I haven’t always been the biggest FKA Twigs fan, but her recent single releases have me questioning if I’ve been missing something truly special. Her latest drop, Perfect Stranger, is the second single from her forthcoming project, Eusexua, and it’s definitely worth the hype.
Experimental alt-pop is having a major moment right now, and FKA Twigs is absolutely in her element. Perfect Stranger dives deep into the thrill of risking it all for a night with a stranger. The sound creates an intimate atmosphere that builds beautifully alongside the lyrics. It perfectly captures that electrifying rush you feel when you meet someone new, filled with passion, lust, and mystery.
And let’s talk about the music video! It elevates the song even further, allowing us to witness Twigs transform through a kaleidoscope of partners. Each shift in visuals adds layers to the narrative, enhancing the themes of desire and connection. Watching her embody different personas is a captivating experience that really makes you appreciate the song on a deeper level.
Overall, Perfect Stranger feels like a bold statement from FKA Twigs, and I’m intrigued to see where she takes us next.
I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend x BANKS (feat. Doechii)
AN EX-HATING ATHEM FOR THE AGES: 7.6/10
I’ve seriously missed BANKS, and she’s finally back with a new track that’s got me captivated! I Hate Your Ex-Girlfriend’s electronic, gritty production paired with BANKS’s hauntingly melodic vocals and some absolutely insane lyrics make for a fantastic reintroduction. BANKS seems to be back and firing on all cylinders—this is the BANKS I love!
And can we just take a moment to appreciate Doechii? She absolutely devours her feature! Her verse is like a breath of fresh air that hits harder than a surprise jump scare in a horror movie. It reminds me of those glory days when Nicki Minaj was on everyone’s tracks, stealing the spotlight like it was her job. Doechii’s aggressive entrance followed by that smooth flow is an absolute highlight, showcasing her versatility and lyrical prowess.
Overall, this track is a thrilling ride from start to finish. With BANKS back in the game and Doechii serving some serious heat, it feels like the perfect time to dive back into their music. If this is just a taste of what’s to come, then you better believe I’m here for the whole feast! Don’t sleep on this one—trust me, it’s a must-add to your playlist!
Fantasy x JADE
I’M FEELING THE THIRLWALL FANTASY: 8.9/10
She’s done it again! JADE—formerly Jade Thirlwall of Little Mix fame—is on a solo roll, and it’s a glorious sight. Following hits like Angel Of My Dreams and Midnight Cowboy her latest single, Fantasy, is just as delightful. Seriously, this woman is on a steady uphill climb, delivering pop perfection with every release.
“Fantasy” is a sultry love anthem that screams disco magic. With a rich synth backdrop and the perfect touch of guitar strums, her ASMR purrs and vocal flourishes blend into an ecstatic, club-ready anthem. It feels fresh and modern while giving a nostalgic nod to the classics—like a time warp you actually want to be in!
And the visuals? Think disco glam with a Carrie-esque twist. JADE’s all-out approach to pop is not just refreshing; it’s downright exhilarating.
But what’s truly impressive is how each of her singles this year showcases a unique sound and daring mix of genres. She’s crafting a pop playlist that knows no bounds! JADE is proving herself to be a REAL pop diva, boldly experimenting and taking risks. Buckle up, because we’re lucky to be along for the ride in JADE’s fabulous musical journey!
