Israel's dangerous game of escalation is playing out on the global stage, showing no signs of letting up. What began as an ethnic cleansing campaign in Gaza has morphed into a broader military strategy that threatens regional stability. As tensions rise, the implications are far-reaching—not just for those directly affected but for the entire international community.
What We Know So Far About Israel’s Attacks on Iran
Israeli officials are claiming they’ve launched “precise strikes” on military targets in Iran, zeroing in on “things that might have threatened us in the past or could do so in the future.”
Several explosions have been heard in and around the Iranian capital, Tehran, and Karaj city.
The United States was not involved in the strikes, but received a heads-up on the attack.
There is still a major question regarding the extent of Israel’s attacks on Iranian soil.
As Israel cranks up the destruction dial in Gaza and Lebanon, NBC News reports that they’ve targeted barracks and a weapons depot near Tehran. If you’ve been keeping tabs on the region, this isn’t exactly shocking news—Netanyahu has been handing out orders like they’re party favors. And of course, Israeli officials are waving the “self-defense” banner, with military spokesperson Daniel Hagari confirming that Israeli forces are busy “conducting precise strikes.” And as I write this there are now claims of a “second wave” of attacks on Iranian soil.
It has not been reported that they have hit any energy sites—again not surprising as this was part of the cozy agreement between the White House and Israel as Biden refused to back any decision to strike Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Who knew diplomacy could be so… selective?
DAWN Advocacy Director Raed Jarrar made a solid point: these attacks on Iran wouldn’t be happening without the Biden administration’s “blind military and political support” for Israel. This kind of unchecked support is what allows Israel to flex its muscles all over the region, and it’s a pretty devastating reality.
And this all unfolds after Secretary of State Antony Blinken finished a trip to Israel and Saudi Arabia, where he attempted to broker a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel. But don’t worry, those calls for a ceasefire are just drowned out by the constant sonic booms and explosions—nothing to see here!
It's impossible to discuss these recent strikes without acknowledging Israel’s brutal occupation of Gaza and its assaults on other nations in the region. After Blinken’s return from the Middle East he made a stop in London where Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, one of the U.S.’s closest allies, confronted him to say, “ethnic cleansing [is] taking place” in Gaza. Many see this as the Middle East teetering on the brink of war; I see it as the world already caught in the middle of a conflict that’s edging us toward World War III. And the kicker? The U.S. has the power to change the game. We could be the grown-ups in the room, but instead, we’re acting like the cool kids who ignore the fight in the back.
Even the Israeli public is starting to split on the Gaza war, with protests popping up and calls for a more peaceful approach growing louder. So how much longer can the Israeli government keep up this brutal charade? At this point, it feels like a high-stakes game of chicken, and we all know how that ends—spoiler alert: nobody wins.
The real question is whether our leaders will finally listen to the American people, who are increasingly demanding an end to the violence and a push for peace. Will Kamala Harris who has stated she wants peace finally listen? If we don’t reign in this chaos now, we might just find ourselves embroiled in a conflict that could redefine global politics for years to come and lower our political influence in the region. So, let’s hope someone steps up to hit the brakes before this wild ride gets even wilder. After all, we can’t afford to let history repeat itself—especially when the stakes are so high.
